When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer
In Walt Whitman’s poem “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer”, a student struggles to maintain a sense of wonder about the cosmos as it gets reduced to numbers by a brilliant but droning lecturer. Growing impatient, he leaves the classroom to see the stars with his own eyes. Like Whitman’s young scholar, the artists in this exhibition balance facts and data with poetry and mystery in hybrid practices that investigate how we observe, process, and present information.
